Caring for your pet rabbit
Rabbits generally live 9 to 12 years and range in weight from 3 to 20 lbs depending on the breed. The American Rabbit Breeders Association currently recognizes 47 breeds of rabbits!
When housing a rabbit you want lots of roaming room. Whether that be an extra large cage with daily runs out of the cage or an entire room devoted to your pet.
Preferred temperature is below 28 degrees Celcius. Provide your rabbit with a litter box. They are very intelligent and can usually be taught how to use one consistently.
Rabbits are social and enjoy hours of interaction and exercise. Offer them a chewable hide out for extra comfort.
When it comes to their diet, rabbits love to eat. Providing them with a low protein food and hay is essential. Offer Timothy hay over Alfalfa hay all day long and feed approx. 1/8 to 1/4 cup of rabbit pellets daily.
Think dense and green when feeding fresh food to your rabbit. 1/2 to 1 cup of fresh leafy greens such as Bok Choy, carrot tops, spinach and romaine lettuce can be fed daily. Avoid too many watery foods such as Iceberg lettuce and celery as well as sugary ones like carrots and most fruits. Be careful... A diet high in sugars and carbohydrates can lead to obesity and a variety of health problems.
Rabbit generally do a great job of grooming themselves so baths are not necessary . Long haired rabbits should be brushed weekly to avoid any matting. Their nails should be trimmed every 2 months or so.
